Environment Agency Launches Public consultation on the proposed decision and draft permits for Sizewell C
05 Jul, 2022
Clr. Alan Williams
What we’ll be consulting on
The Environment Agency is the independent environmental regulator for the nuclear industry in England. We make sure that nuclear power stations meet high standards of environmental protection.
Any company that wants to operate a nuclear power station must show that it can do the following safely and securely, whilst also protecting the environment:
build, commission, operate and decommission the power station
manage the radioactive waste it produces
In May 2020, EDF's SZC company applied to us for 3 environmental permits. These are permits to:
dispose of and discharge radioactive wastes
operate standby power supply systems using diesel generators
discharge cooling water and liquid effluents into the North Sea
We publicly consulted on these permits from July to October 2020. We received consultation responses from members of the public, public bodies and departments, and other interested parties. We have been considering the relevant responses to this consultation and have been carrying out our assessments since then.
Today we are launching a 12-week public consultation where you will be able to view the proposed decision documents, draft permits and supporting documents, and send us your comments.
For more details about what the permits are for, and the scope of the consultation please visit our information page
Viewing the documents and making your comments
All of the documents are available to view and download online.
We have designed the online consultation to make it easy to submit responses to the questions. We would prefer you to comment online as this will help us to gather and summarise responses quickly and accurately.
We realise that not everyone will have access, or the ability to view documents online, so we’ll send printed reference copies to the nearby libraries and town council offices. These will be available from 22 July.
You will also be able to view the documents at the drop-in events.
Please send us your comments on the proposed decision documents and draft permits:
